Q: I've been hearing a lot about massage and skin care "competitions" and championships. Is this something I should participate in?

A: That is an interesting question and one that I've seen a lot of "spirited" conversations about recently. Though I've heard a lot of criticism from some onlookers, the conversations I've had with people who participate in these events are overall very enthusiastic. In addition to what I've already mentioned, participants have shared with me how much they appreciate the chance to network, experience camaraderie, and develop their skills in a completely different way. In general, they have a level of excitement and energy about the art of healing that I've not seen anywhere else. To me, that is a great thing, and I'm thrilled to see people get so excited about their profession.
Without placing any judgment on particular events or competitors, I will say that if you want to be part of an experience that will expose you to new ways of doing things within your field, introduce you to individuals who are passionate about their craft, and broaden your thinking about how to deliver massage or skin care services, then go for it!
