Showing Up For Success

Updated: Oct 24

A lot of success in life and business comes just by showing up. I mean, certainly, there’s training, preparation, education, planning, and all that. But at the end of it all, none of those will matter if you don’t take action and SHOW UP!

Several years ago, this message became super clear when I placed in the Top 3 in my age group at a local triathlon for the first time. Though I'd done plenty of races in the past and had been training for another event, I wasn't in top form for this one. But the last-minute race benefitted a cause I care about, so I decided to dive in with only two days' notice.

I remember the crisp May morning quite well. I was not feeling great, and almost didn’t do the race. But something inside told me to push through my perceived limitations and head to the start line. That was the easy part. Then the race started.

A quick summary:

  • The swim was not my best: super cold water, an unfamiliar pool, and my first event in almost two years.

  • The bike was better - it is usually my best area. However, my skills got put to the test on a course that had a lot of rolling hills, with most of the steepest parts being very close to the finish.

  • Being slow on the first two segments put me very near the end of starting the run. Similar to the bike ride, the course had a lot of ups and downs for my tired legs to cover. I ran as much as I could, walked when I needed to, and kept going until I crossed the finish.

Though there were others who came in after me, most everyone was already finished. As a result, I didn't stick around to check my times and left the event to grab some breakfast.

Imagine my surprise when I got home later and learned that I placed in the Top 3 in my age group! This cold, slow, hilly race, which felt like my worst, was the first time I'd ever placed at an event.

But here’s the funny part…there were only three people in my age group. We were all automatically in the Top 3 just because we signed up, showed up, and made it through:-)

Though a lot of folks don’t realize it, many athletes and professionals do “well” simply because they just show up when others won’t. They are one of the best in their niche or field because they are willing to step out, take a risk, try something new, or simply BE THERE when others aren’t.

Just showing up to attempt to conquer a difficult task or goal is much more than many people will even consider, let alone do. If triathlons have taught me nothing else, it is that doing hard things that others won't can help you succeed when others don't.

Though it's no longer my only Top 3 finish, it is still the most memorable. I showed up, even when I didn’t feel fully ready. I kept going, even when it was hard. I made it through to the end, with an outcome I could not have predicted.
